Teresa Deskur Awarded President's Scholarship

ARS President Carol Mishler has chosen Teresa Deskur as this year's President's Scholarship award winner. The scholarship award, made possible by generous ARS donors and several memorial funds*, will go toward Teresa's participation at the Amherst Early Music Festival. She plans to hone her skills to then teach recorder to others, a key component in her selection.

Teresa described her experience and aspirations in her application:

"I remember my first summer at the Amherst Early Music Festival well. I was about to turn 16, and was nervous but excited to get to meet other young recorder players and early musicians. There weren't many in my small town, and that first week at the Virtuoso Recorder Program was so inspiring to me. I had the chance to play for and learn from world-renowned teachers, and for the first time, got a glimpse into the world of professional recorder playing. I returned the following summer, and had a similarly excellent experience at the Baroque Academy program. Now that I am in the early stages of my career as a recorder player and teacher, I am hoping to delve deeper into performance and pedagogy skills at Amherst. I plan to hone my technical and musical abilities through daily masterclasses and lessons with Amherst faculty, and to learn from experienced professionals about the best ways to work with recorder students.

"Since graduating, I have taught several workshops through ARS chapters (Washington DC, Bergen County, Philadelphia, and Rochester) for adult recorder students. I have greatly enjoyed this teaching, and hope to learn from and observe the master teachers at Amherst who have made this their life's work. My undergraduate education training focused primarily on K-12 students, and so I look forward to learning about the unique strengths and challenges associated with teaching adult learners. Upon my return home, I plan to share this knowledge with others, through teaching more workshops and building a private studio."

* The memorial funds of Andrew Acs, Jennifer W. Lehmann, Kenneth Wollitz, and the Somerset Hills Scholarship, in addition to designated donations from members and contributors, are used toward ARS scholarships.
