Traveling Teacher Program Brings Players Together in Maine

Submitted by Dorothy Beeuwkes

We want to thank the ARS once again for making a very nice music workshop possible through the Traveling Teacher Program. We have had these workshops now for so many years, that the organizing of it has become a routine. We now have traditions of what meals we serve and who brings what. The only matter still to be resolved is the clean up, for we all want to hurry off to music making after our lunch!

We all so love to see each other and play music together under Larry Zukof’s expert and good-humored and inspiring guidance.

Because of a slightly larger attendance we played both days in the Community Center, with plenty of space and nice acoustics. Most of us were recorder players but we had also a few singers, and 3 viol players (including Larry and his wife Pam) and one contrabass and crumhorn. Two singers could not come this time. And of course there was Dolce, Larry and Pam’s dog, who mostly slept through it all.

Larry wrote us afterwards that he thought that we played well and achieved a high level of ensemble sound on the pieces that we worked on! He mentioned as memorable: “His Golden Locks” by Dowland, the Victoria “O Sacrum Convivium, the very beautiful “Pavane” by Byrd when played on low recorders and viols. Also a piece by Scarlatti and the Bach finale from the peasant Cantata.

We loved the variety of the pieces, “Content desir” by Crecquillon and by Sermisi, Dances by Mainerio and Susato, music by Handel, by Tallis and more.

Other highlights were our lunch outside on the porch on Friday, on an unusually mild day, and the walks some of us took to and from the Community Center, and when, just before sunset, the sky turned pink.

With so much thanks from all of us!

From Larry Zukof, the Traveling Teacher:
Once again, Dorothy was a most hospitable and generous host fostering a most enjoyable couple of days of lovely music making. Friday, we had 13 people focusing on larger instrumental and vocal works, collegium format (recorders, two viols and a couple who also sang in addition to me) and 11 on Saturday focusing on recorder/consort repertoire.

Please extend my gratitude to the ARS Board for continuing to support this wonderful program.
