Patrick von Huene to receive ARS Distinguished Achievement Award

ANNOUNCEMENT

ARS Distinguished Achievement Award
The ARS Board is pleased to announce Patrick von Huene as the 2025 recipient of the ARS Distinguished Achievement Award.

The award is intended to honor a person or performing group with a high public profile, whose high-level work with the recorder has extended over a long period of time and
over more than one specific area of achievement, and exercised significant influence in North America.

Born into a musical family, recorder builder Patrick von Huene started formal music study at the age of four. Lessons on recorder (of course), piano, oboe, percussion, and other instruments followed. He grew up listening to his parents, Friedrich and Ingeborg, playing chamber music with their friends in the home, attended their performances with the Boston Camerata and other groups, and on weekends earned spending money by sweeping the floors and making order in his father’s workshop.

In the fall of 1980, while Patrick was taking time off from running a restaurant, his parents asked if he would help out in the workshop. Training was intense as he learned carving, voicing, tuning, engineering tasks, and all the other skills required for recorder production. Forty-four years later he is one of most respected recorder makers in the world and still loves his work. In addition to making the highly acclaimed von Huene recorders, the workshop is the authorized North American repair agent for Moeck, Mollenhauer, Küng, Aafab, and most other European makers, and Patrick does nearly all the warranty repairs himself.

Patrick credits the success of the workshop to his dedicated staff, all skilled performers and teachers: Eric Haas, Carol Lewis, Roy Sansom, and Eddie Cipullo. The von Huene Workshop, Inc. strives to provide the best possible instruments and service to each customer. Patrick’s hope is that when customers receive their instrument, whether new, used, or after repair, there will be a “wow” factor inspiring them to enjoy playing.

When not at the shop, Patrick’s interests include exotic automobiles, cooking haute cuisine, and listening to music of many genres, particularly jazz.
