Berkeley Festival & Exhibition

June 6-14, 2026
Berkeley Festival & Exhibition
Berkeley, CA
Director: Derek Tam

Founded in 1990 and produced by the San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS), the Festival has become one of the world’s largest and most important early music conclaves, deemed “a remarkable institution on the American musical scene” by The New York Times.

This year, we’re excited to present 21 main stage concerts, as well as special events, a three-day exhibition, community workshops, and dozens of Fringe presentations. There is truly something for everyone! From Boethius and Bach to gamelan and Gershwin, this year’s lineup promises to entice and enthrall.

Building off the success of BFX 2024, our mainstage concerts will continue to be pay-what-you-can, which have brought record-breaking crowds to SFEMS in recent years. As always, we encourage patrons to “pay it forward”—consider purchasing a subscription to ensure premium seating, and to undergird our commitment to financial accessibility in early music.

The Festival Exhibition and Marketplace—free and open to the public—takes place Thursday, June 11 through Saturday, June 13, 2026.
The Exhibition features the work of instrument makers, publishers, retailers, performing and service organizations, and all others who provide materials, information, and support for the early music community.

Music from Spain and England!
Spain and England, two world powers in the Renaissance, were great patrons of the arts, bequeathing gorgeous music, art, and poetry to the generations that came after them. As we celebrate the Semiquincentennial of the United States we’ll immerse ourselves in the music of Spain and England from the Middle Ages on, as well as music of the New World and the Netherlands. Follow the thread from the great Renaissance powers to the countries they colonized, and on to these countries as they gained independence.

Revel in the lyrical sounds of early music instruments as you share your musical gifts during a week-long intensive early music workshop. Enhance your skills in small classes taught by expert instructors with emphasis on improving technique and playing with ensembles. At Hidden Valley Music Seminars, An Institute of the Arts, nestled amongst oak and buckeye trees below majestic hillsides, enjoy a serene and inspiring place for playing music. For intermediate to advanced recorder and viola da gamba players. Recorder players must be able to play at least two sizes (at least one F instrument and one C instrument). The week #2 program, November 1, 2026, includes dulcian and shawm. The dulcian and shawm programs are open by audition. Please contact the workshop director at tishberlin@sbcglobal.net to arrange an online audition. Program registration is done through Road Scholar and closes 35 days before the start date.
